HAPPY BIRTHDAY PIGEON!!!! From Bell View Elementary Students

This week in the library we celebrated Pigeon's birthday. Thanks to Hyperion Books for sending us a really fun birthday kit which included stickers, coloring sheets, balloons, and a poster. We added to the birthday kit and ordered another poster, book marks, puzzles and a stuffed pigeon toy.

We started library time with a youtube video. The 3:40 minute video was by Mo Willems the author of the Pigeon books. After the video we read his two new books. The Duckling Gets a Cookie!? and Let's Go for a Drive!  Great new books. We did a display shelf of all our Mo Willems books and of course the shelves were emptied. Kids really love his books. (So do adults)

During their library time the students could put together Pigeon puzzles and also color a Pigeon coloring sheet. We were surprised and delighted that even the 5th and 6th graders got involved in the activities. We have hung all the coloring sheets on our bulletin boards. The kids were very creative and loved Pigeon's birthday party.

April is POETRY month at Butler Elementary

April is POETRY month at Butler Elementary!
We have a large poetry collection and highlighted it by pulling books and separating them into the many different poetry styles, such as haiku, shape poems, song poems, funny poems, and limericks.

We invite students to write their own poems.
We are calling it the Poetry Party and the students can stop and read at any of the tables.
*Shout out to Redsmith Library for the printable poetry signs.

SPRUCEWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
DEWEY DECIMAL SYSTEM

Teaching the library lessons in a new and exciting way is always a challenge.  This year we decided to write and dedicate a "Dewey Decimal Song" for our students.  We recieved permission from "Carolintone Music Company, Inc (c) 1962 Renewed Carlintone Music Company Inc." to use the music of "Ballad Of Jed Clampett" as the music to go with our personally written words.  This is the theme song from the Beverly Hillbillies TV show.  The words are listed below.  Our students loved the song!  We offerred a reading reward for any and all students who would take the challenge to sing the entire song without a copy of the words.  We have had a few students willing to take the challenge.

Dewey Decimal Song
Sang to the tune of "Ballad of Jed Clampett" -  "Used by permission of Carolintone Music Company, Inc. (c) 1962 Renewed Carolintone Music Company, Inc."

The Dewey decimal system is what we use
To organize books that you might choose
So let’s get started and soon you know
All the places where books should go

Now 000 to 99
Are the books in General Works you’ll find
The 100 section is where you’ll see
The books about Philosophy

If religion’s a topic that interests you
The 200 shelf you can look through
Social Science is three oh oh
For fairy tales and fables you know

In the 400 section you can learn to speak
German, Spanish, French or Greek
The 500 section is where you’ll find
The sciences to stretch your mind

If you like pets or like to cook
Technology is where to look
Space and health and robots too
The 6oo section is made for you

For arts and crafts and sports galore
The 700 shelf has those and more
The 800 section has poetry
And stories and plays for you and me

The 900 shelves are history
You’ll also find geography
In our library you’ll do well

With the Dewey system you’ll never fail.

EVE BUNTING

One of our favorite displays/activites in our library is our author spotlight.  During the year, we spotlight different authors and share some of our favorite books written by the author.  Above is a display for Eve Bunting.  She is a wonderful author to spotlight because she has written picture books, fiction books, and non-fiction books.  We did a pair and share for grades 1-3 with her non-fiction book Whales and her realistic fiction picture book Whales Passing.   This activity allowed us to discuss different book genres and to reinforce the core standards that these grades are learning.  We shared a book talk on Is There Anybody There? with 4-6 grades.  It is a great mystery that students can relate to and enjoy.   We have found that author spotlights introduce students to new authors and more than just one book that they might be interested in reading.   Our students love learning about the authors and some of the secrets about the authors as well.
