SPRUCEWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
DEWEY DECIMAL SYSTEM

Teaching the library lessons in a new and exciting way is always a challenge.  This year we decided to write and dedicate a "Dewey Decimal Song" for our students.  We recieved permission from "Carolintone Music Company, Inc (c) 1962 Renewed Carlintone Music Company Inc." to use the music of "Ballad Of Jed Clampett" as the music to go with our personally written words.  This is the theme song from the Beverly Hillbillies TV show.  The words are listed below.  Our students loved the song!  We offerred a reading reward for any and all students who would take the challenge to sing the entire song without a copy of the words.  We have had a few students willing to take the challenge.

Dewey Decimal Song
Sang to the tune of "Ballad of Jed Clampett" -  "Used by permission of Carolintone Music Company, Inc. (c) 1962 Renewed Carolintone Music Company, Inc."

The Dewey decimal system is what we use
To organize books that you might choose
So let’s get started and soon you know
All the places where books should go

Now 000 to 99
Are the books in General Works you’ll find
The 100 section is where you’ll see
The books about Philosophy

If religion’s a topic that interests you
The 200 shelf you can look through
Social Science is three oh oh
For fairy tales and fables you know

In the 400 section you can learn to speak
German, Spanish, French or Greek
The 500 section is where you’ll find
The sciences to stretch your mind

If you like pets or like to cook
Technology is where to look
Space and health and robots too
The 6oo section is made for you

For arts and crafts and sports galore
The 700 shelf has those and more
The 800 section has poetry
And stories and plays for you and me

The 900 shelves are history
You’ll also find geography
In our library you’ll do well

With the Dewey system you’ll never fail.
