An Afternoon at Hogwarts

This was so fun we had to share. This is a slideshow from one of Butler Elementary's monthly after school library events. We truly had a magical afternoon last week. We had 60 kids!

OAKDALE DISPLAY BOOKCASE

We recently had an update to our UGLY bookcase. It previously had glass doors and glass shelves. The district sent someone to replace the glass shelves with sturdy wood and a fresh coat of paint. Yay! Now we have nice display shelves.

Currently we are displaying Caldecott and Newbery books. Guess what? The students are checking them out! Interesting how simply displaying something will make it fresh and new!

"Book Look" Bulletin Board

We are so fortunate to have such a great library at Park Lane Elementary. With over 12,000 books in our inventory, our students have so many books to choose from! This year we decided to help them share their favorites with other students. Near our checkout desk we placed a "Book Look" bulletin board. Students that wish to can complete a short report detailing a book they have read. We suggest they tell us who their favorite character was, what they learned by reading the book, and if they would recommend it to others. If they would rather, they can draw a picture instead.
When students complete their "Book Look" we post it on the bulletin board. Also, as a "thank you" for contributing, we give them a bookmark. Right now we are using the cool bookmarks we got at our last in-service. We'll be placing an order for more bookmarks soon.
Student response to our "Book Look" wall has been favorable. It is so nice to see students enjoying their books, and sharing them with others, but even more importantly, it's great to see the "Panther Pride" on their faces when they see their work on our wall.

October classroom contest......

Hi all,
This is my first attempt at blogging so here goes.
Kathy Donahue and I went to the district (where you get all the cutouts and stuff).
We came back with enough skeletons for each class, (except kindergarten),
the class needed to work together to put together the skeleton.Come up with their favorite character from a book and dress up the skeleton. We will hang them up around the library and vote for the best one. They have all come so detailed I think everyone should win something. We will post a picture when we get them all in.
We have been reading fractured fairytales to the younger kids. This week it's The three Bears. We are reading Joey Pigza swallowed the key. The kids seem to like the book.
This year we have also created the "Canyon View Cafe" It's an area for the older kids. Grades 3-6 although all the classes use it. We have bean bag chairs, studio chairs, and a small sofa. It helps for quiet reading.
We also have "The Castle" for the younger grades.
Ok I think that is enough rambling. Pictures soon.....

Attention Harry Potter Fans:
J.K. Rowling's new, safe, interactive website for the Harry Potter books, Pottermore.com will be open for registration at the end of October. And then the registration process will go in phases. Remember, good things come to those who wait!

Bella Vista Elementary students learned about Pottermore.com during story time when we introduced J.K. Rowling for our Meet the Author of the Month for September for the older grades. We shared her biography, read exerpts from Harry Potter books then showed her introducing Pottermore.com on this website so the students could "meet" her. Take a look at this website, it is VERY IMAGINATIVE!
