Titanic Sinks at Butler Elementary

Butler Elementary had a lot of fun with the Titanic. That is a paradox!

To celebrate the 100th Anniversary, we made a huge Titanic bulletin board and asked the students to draw what they could see looking inside a Titanic porthole.

We gathered many Titanic books and left them on tables so the whole school could read them. During library story time, we read a simple version of the Titanic Sinking and then had the children don some props and read the history of six of the people on the Titanic including Captain Smith, Molly Brown, a member of the band, etc.
There is a great interest in the Titanic which even includes Kindergartners.

"Book Look" Bulletin Board

We are so fortunate to have such a great library at Park Lane Elementary. With over 12,000 books in our inventory, our students have so many books to choose from! This year we decided to help them share their favorites with other students. Near our checkout desk we placed a "Book Look" bulletin board. Students that wish to can complete a short report detailing a book they have read. We suggest they tell us who their favorite character was, what they learned by reading the book, and if they would recommend it to others. If they would rather, they can draw a picture instead.
When students complete their "Book Look" we post it on the bulletin board. Also, as a "thank you" for contributing, we give them a bookmark. Right now we are using the cool bookmarks we got at our last in-service. We'll be placing an order for more bookmarks soon.
Student response to our "Book Look" wall has been favorable. It is so nice to see students enjoying their books, and sharing them with others, but even more importantly, it's great to see the "Panther Pride" on their faces when they see their work on our wall.

StoryWalk at Butler Elementary

Hi! Butler Elementary would like to share our StoryWalk! StoryWalk is a great way for students and families to read a fun picture book while getting some exercise. We laminated each page of a book and then posted them around the school playground. It's so fun to see the children running from page to page at recess reading the story. Our students love it and we hope to change it monthly. The original StoryWalk project was created in Vermont and has since spread to 22 states.
