Draper Elementary Media Center

The first week of January we read the book Meanwhile..by Jules Feiffer. This book the students really enjoyed because they did not know what was going to happen next.

The second week we laughed so hard when we read the Chickens to the Rescue by John Himmelman.

The Third week we read the book Art and Max by David Wiesner. The students had fun helping with the story.

The fourth week we celebrated Chinese New Year. We talked about what makes a Chinese Dragon and that the dragon has special meaning . It stands for strength and luck and each year the parade ends with a dragon. The dragon is made from the claws of a hawk, legs of a tiger, horns of a deer, ears of a ox, whiskers of a catfish, body of a snake, mouth of a camel, eyes of a rabbit, scales of a carp and that's what makes a Chinese dragon.

We also did the story of the Chinese Zodiac. Each student made a dragon puppet.

On the fifth week we are doing science experiments with motion.

The Mitten Tree

We read The Mitten Tree to the students. It is a heartwarming winter story about the beauty of doing a good deed without expecting recognition. We challenged them to complete their own secret good deed. They were given a coloring page to take home to color and write on the back the good deed they performed. They could also donate some mittens if they wanted to that would be taken to "The Road Home". This has been a big success. Kids love to help others!

Treasure Chest of Rare Books

The Treasure Chest of Rare Books is a free program that is sponsored by The Book Arts Program at the University of Utah's J. Willard Marriott Library. On Monday, we arranged for this program to visit with our 6th grade classes in the library at Butler Elementary. They spent an hour with each class sharing rare books such as a Sumerian clay tablet, Egyptian papyrus paper, Asian palm leaf books, and many others for students to touch and examine. They end the program with a book making activity each student can take home. They are open to visiting all ages, but it fits particularly well with the 6th grade curriculum.

If you are interested, contact Louona Tanner at 801-942-3277 or tannerbooks@gmail.com OR
Judy Anderson at judithannanderson@hotmail.com. They were just great about arranging a time that fit for our teachers.

I'll attach the slide show below- it's really for parents (the teachers put it on their blogs), so more photos than you will want to look at, but you can zip through them quickly if you want to get an idea of what was presented.

Thanks-

Ali Duff & Debbie Tyler
