Dumpy the library PIG

While on an early morning walk, I spied a porcine face peering out of a large white dumpster. I made my husband carry it on the 2 mile hike home. What a find! Dumpy has had such a good time in the library. She has been kidnapped twice by teachers and decorated and she has celebrated every holiday.

Dumpy came to a good end when the top 30 students who had checked out and read the most books this year got to take a smack at Dumpy. (She actually is a piñata.)

It was a great year at Butler Elementary. We wish all of you a wonderful relaxing summer!

Welcome to the Garden of Readin'!  (I know...AWESOME, right?)  This is all ready for fall...except we need a park bench or two.  We are still looking!  The butterflies and flowers are made from pages of old books!

What Will You Read Next?: Module 7 Lesson 1 #2

The students are always looking for new books to read.  Mrs. Allison and Mrs. Coombs used the district's purchase of the Public Performance Site License to print posters of  favorite books as a display in the library. The students can find the books on their own by reading the call numbers on the posters. This has been a valuable resource for the students to refer to throughout the year. 

Bella Vista's Beehive Book Club Beach Party 2013; Module 7 Lesson 3 #4

    Welcome to Bella Vista's Beehive Book Club Beach Party!
  A big thank you goes out to our students for participating in the Beehive Book Club this year.
 Over 920 student votes were submitted to CLAU's Beehive Book Competition and around
2,000 Beehive Nominees were read by students this year!

And The Beehive Award Winners Are...

All students were invited to attend the  Beehive Book Club Beach Party during class visits, May 20-24, 2013.  Invitations were sent home with students a week before, the principal and teachers were notified and signs were posted on the windows of the library.

All the students who read one or more Beehive Nominees for 2012-13 received a colorful, plastic lei.  Over 400 leis were handed out throughout the week. These students were also eligible for the drawing to win a Beehive Award winning book in each class.  The more Beehive Nominees for 2012-13 a student read the more times their name went into the drawing so they had a better chance of winning.                                                                                                     

The Book Worm Estimate is a favorite party activity of the students, even though the chance of winning is one out of the entire student- body! The students write down their guess of the number of sour gummy worms in a jar and the student who guesses correctly, wins the jar of gummy worms!

The top reader of Beehive books in each class received a certificate signed by the Principal and 

Media Assistants and some fun prizes.  

At the Beehive Book Club Beach Party, all the Beehive Nominees were shown to the students.  They raised their hands when they liked a book shown. The winning books the students helped win with their votes were announced for Bella Vista and for the Beehive Award.  Better Together and The Unwanteds won at Bella Vista, Won Ton and LuLu and The Brontosaurus won the Beehive Awards. And Press Here and Pop! The Invention of Bubble Gum won at Bella Vista and received the Utah Beehive Awards.

At Check Out Time each student received a cup of colorful Goldfish crackers.

Special awards were presented to the top readers of Beehive books in Kindergarten - Third Grade (the winning student read 30 of the Beehive Nominees) and in the Fourth - Sixth Grade (there was a tie between two friends who both read 39 of the Beehive Nominees).  And for the top reader of Beehive books for 2012-13 for the entire school.  This year we had a tie. Way to go students!

PIZZA PARTIES were awarded to the classes who read the most Beehive Nominees.  
The Two Top Classes were in Two Categories:
 One class from Kindergarten -Third Grade and one from Fourth - Sixth Grade

FYI, HOW IT BEGAN THIS YEAR: The Kick-Off for our third annual Beehive Book Club was during class visits in the Fall. All the Beehive Nominated books were introduced, rules of the book club were explained as well as the announcement that rewards would be given during a beach party at the end of the year to students who read the Beehives and followed the rules of the club.  Each year we have a different theme.  This year our theme was "Catch a Wave of Adventure, Read Beehive Books."  Each student became a member at the Kick Off by coloring a paper surfboard and stapling a paper die cut boy or girl surfer to the surfboard. The surfers were then attached to paper waves that surrounded the walls in the hallways outside of the library with our theme.  For more details, contact Mrs. Allison or Mrs. Coombs.

For the "National Library Week"  we did a read-a-thon chair. We asked the PTA  for some books for prizes from the book fair. This year we were able to have  a book for each student. When the classes came in, we first checked out books. Then we all sat around the read-a-thon chair. We picked out a book at the class level to read for 1st - 4th grade. Each student sat in the chair and read for one minuter. As soon as they got off next one sat down.Then went and picked a book. In 5th - 6th grade the students just read the books they had checked out. It was really fun to hear all the different books.

This month we did  the "Let's Do Nothing! book by Tony Fucile. I found online an event kit that went along with this book. The students had a lot of fun doing the something that was done in the book.

Draper Elementary Module 7 Lesson 3 # 5

Our 6th grade classes  were studing Ancient Egypt and Mummies.  They made pyramids and learned how to make a mummy.  They used a chicken for there mummy and placed it inside the pyramid and they displayed them in the media center.  We also made a display of books about Ancient Egypt and pyramids and Pharaohs and Greek temples.  The classes enjoyed this display in the media center.

For an fun activity one week we had each class listen to some poems as we read to them and we also made a chart with a poem on it and had the class say that poem out loud.  The students were given a leaf and they wrote a poem on the leaf and placed there leaf on the Poet-Tree.  We pulled some fun poem books and made a display.  The students had a lot of fun with this activity.

Our 4th grade classes make a float about there county for there report.  They bring there floats into the media center and we display them.  The classes enjoy looking that the floats and learning about that county.
